Scope Note: Cartridge-based 1/4-inch analog audiotape format. The 8-track cartridge is a magnetic tape-based recorded sound format that was used exclusively for commercial releases. The tape is composed of magnetic particles or pigment, binder, and a polyester base. It was a popular format from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s. [Use for 8 tracks.]
