Biographical / Historical
Founded in 1985, the Nebraska State Quilt Guild (NSQG) is a statewide non-profit organization of “individuals who have sought a forum for the purpose of furthering education about quilts, promoting the art of quilt making, and expanding the friendship circle shared by persons dedicated to quilts and the fiber arts.” In 1986, NSQG published their first newsletter and chose their official logo. In the same year, they established their annual meeting, Quilt Nebraska, and the Nebraska Quilter's Hall of Fame. In 1987 the NSQG established the Speaker's Bureau and formed the Awards Committee and State Fair Committee. In 1988, the NSQG created the Library Project Committee to distribute quilt books to all Nebraska Libraries annually. In the same year they began to hold "Quilter's Day Out" parties around the state to promote the guild. In 1994, the guild held the first Quilt History Day, and their Quilt Preservation Project began documenting quilt collections in 106 museums across the state. In 1998, the guild created the James Gang Pledge Committee to begin fundraising for a 10-year, $150,000 pledge to the International Quilt Museum. In 2001, the NSQG quilt collection became part of the International Quilt Museum.
The guild continues to carry out their purpose with activities including hosting quilt gatherings around the state, annually donating quilt books to each public library in Nebraska, assisting with the exhibit of quilt entries at the Nebraska State Fair, holding the annual gathering, Quilt Nebraska, that offers lectures, workshops and fellowships, holding an annual quilt show called Threads Across Nebraska, and fundraising for the International Quilt Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
