Roscoe and Meta Cather Collection
Scope and Contents
The Roscoe and Meta Cather Collection is comprised of letters written by Willa Cather, Roscoe Cather, Meta Schaper Cather, Elsie Cather, Edith Lewis, and other family members or friends of Cather. The letters Cather wrote to her brother show a close and loving relationship between the two siblings. Cather shared personal stories, asked questions about financial matters, and shared thoughts about her work. Cather believed that Roscoe, of all her family, best understood her goals and achievements as a writer. The correspondence includes both handwritten and typed letters and picture postcards. Also included are photographs of Cather with her brother Roscoe's family. The collection also includes 77 books that were given to family members by Cather, many of them inscribed to particular family members. The letters are arranged according to the recepient of the letter and then chronologically.
