Biographical / Historical

S. Pitts Wells worked as a farmer prior to marrying his wife, Lille, in 1872. The couple had three children. The eldest child, Kirk, was born in 1872 and died in 1876. The second child, Marshall, also died young from diphtheria in 1879, while the family lived in Rapid City, Dakota Territory. Their third child, James, was born in 1881. Wells switched from farming to teaching in 1874, when he attended the Normal Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. He began teaching in Rapid City and by 1882, Wells became Superintendent of Pennington County. Three years later, in 1885, Wells was elected to the Dakota Territory Legislative Assembly. After another three years, Wells and his family moved to an orchard in Santa Ana, California. A final move occurred in 1903, when Wells moved to Montana to teach and to attend the State Normal School.
