Scope and Contents
The collection contains over 600 postcards dating from the 1900s to the 1930s. The bulk of the collection consists of portraits of opera singers in costume for Richard Wagner opera performances. Also included are postcards with pictures of opera sets for Wagner operas, sets and singers in costume for operas by other composers, a few musician portraits, and some calling cards. Biographical Note
The collector, David Breckbill (1957-2016), was a Wagner scholar, record critic, and collector. He attended Goshen College (BA), the University of Iowa (MA) and the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D.) in piano and musicology. Breckbill taught in the music department at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. He worked as a music critic, writing record reviews for the BBC Music Magazine and the Wagner Journal. In Lincoln, he served on the board of the Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music, writing program notes and giving pre-concert lectures, and earlier he wrote concert and record reviews for the Lincoln Journal-Star. His publishing ventures focused mainly on Wagner pianists, and the history of singing. Included were contributions to the Wagner Compendium and the Cambridge Wagner Encyclopedia.
