Biographical / Historical
Allen Benton served as the first chancellor of the University of Nebraska beginning in January 1871. He oversaw the development of University Hall, the first building for the university, and purchased land for the Agricultural College. He resigned in 1876. Benton was born in New York in 1822 and died in Lincoln, Nebraska, on January 1, 1914.
