Biographical / Historical
The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, designed by architect Philip Johnson, was formally dedicated on May 16, 1963. The collections housed in the gallery focus on the work of American artists. Upon her death in 1950, Mary Frances Sheldon bequeathed her entire personal fortune and her personal art collection to the University of Nebraska in order to build an art gallery. Sheldon's brother, Adams Bromley Sheldon, contributed a portion of his own estate to the building fund. In March 2008 the gallery began operating under its new name, the Sheldon Museum of Art.
