Teaching Aids, Plant Pathology Records
Scope and Contents
The collection is comprised of teaching aids for the Plant Pathology Department. It is broken into five different mediums: 1) Flashcards 2) Drawings 3) Photographs 4) Negatives 5) Glass Plates Each section covers basically the same material, however, some mediums require separate storage for proper preservation. One should take great care when handling the glass plates as they are very heavy and also very fragile. They should be moved slowly and never allowed to shift within the box while carrying. The earliest date found within the material was 1906 and the latest is 1910, however the bulk of the material is not dated so these dates are not a certain beginning and end. The main focus of the collection is diseases afflicting agricultural crops especially corn, beans, and alfalfa. The collection also includes various fruit and floral diseases as well. These were probably used to help students learn and recognize characteristics of certain diseases out in the field. In the Photographs section, there are a few very interesting pictures of departmental buildings from around 1910 in Lincoln and Alliance, Nebraska. It should be noted that according to a note found in one of the boxes from Plant Pathology that some of the potato images are still held by Alexander D. Pavlista of the Scottsbluff Experiment Station.
