Identifier: RG-08-12-01

Scope and Contents

The collection includes correspondence, annual reports, financial statements, budgets, information about department history and faculty, research reports, photographs, drawings, and collected publications related to the work of the state entomologist.

The correspondence includes letters sent or received by Lawrence Bruner, Myron Swenk, O.S. Bare, and H. Douglas Tate. Many letters relate to pests and insects affecting crops and trees within the state. Bruner, Swenk, Bare, and others also worked with agricultural extension agents to assist in gathering information and identification on pest specimens.

Many letters in this collection were sent by Nebraskans providing examples of insects affecting crops, plants, and trees. These insects included the Hessian Fly, cutworms, spider mites, grubs, beetles, moths, boxelder bugs, wire-worms, and included information on their official names, prevalence in the area, and possible control methods. Letters from 1904 include responses from various grain dealers in the state regarding an investigation of the Hessian Fly.

The letters are arranged chronologically with in each letter of the alphabet. Reply letters are with the original letter sent. The research reports, articles, subject files, and photographs are also arranged alphabetically.
