Biographical / Historical

James Canfield served 4 years as chancellor of the University of Nebraska, from 1891 to 1895. He focused closely on university development, both the campus and the number of students in attendance. He left Nebraska to become president of Ohio State University.

He was born in Delaware, Ohio, to Eli Hawley and Martha Hulme Canfield, on March 18, 1847. Canfield and his wife Flavia Camp Canfield were parents of author Dorothy Canfield Fisher. Canfield died on March 29, 1909, in New York.
