Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, research materials, and photographs related to the publication of the University of Nebraska Press Willa Cather Scholarly Editions of Death Comes for the Archbishop and Shadows on the Rock. It also contains a copy of Life magazine from 1951 featuring a story about Willa Cather. This collection is arranged in three series. Arrangement in this collection largely maintains the creator’s original order.

Biographical or Historical Information
John Joseph Murphy (1933 -) is a scholar of late 19th century and early 20th century American literature. He has published numerous works about Willa Cather. He is a professor emeritus of English at Brigham Young University. Murphy sits on the Willa Cather Foundations Board of Governors.
Murphy served as editor of the University of Nebraska Press Willa Cather Scholarly Edition of Death Comes for the Archbishop, published in 1999, and co-editor with David Stouck of the University of Nebraska Press Willa Cather Scholarly Edition of Shadows on the Rock, published in 2005. This edition of Death Comes for the Archbishop received the Ralph Emerson Twitchell Award from the Historical Society of New Mexico in 2000. Note written by Ann Lesch.
