 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MS-0350

Scope and Contents

The Charles E. Cather Collection is comprised of manuscripts, both handwritten and typewritten, of several of Willa Cather's novels and short stories. The majority of the manuscript material is from her novel Sapphira and the Slave Girl. There are letters sent from Cather to her brother James, her sister-in-law Ethel, and her nephew Charles. Contracts for selected novels, both from Houghton-Mifflin and Alfred Knopf, are part of the materials. There is correspondence in which Cather declines offers regarding adaptations for multi-media productions. Personal materials include engagement calendars, notebooks with daily entries and selected research notes, address books, and financial account books. There are also items relating to Charles E. Cather and his grandparents, Willa's parents, Charles F. Cather and Jennie Boak Cather.

Along with the paper records the collection includes books from Edith Lewis's personal collection of Cather books, given to her by Cather, often with inscriptions and photographs of Cather pasted into the preliminary pages. There are a few books that were Willa Cather's personal copies. A few books were presented to her mother and her sister, Elsie Cather.
