A partial transcript provided by the seller:
"The diary begins: "Lincoln Neb Dec 1st 1896 Dear Ella, I don't know whether the following narrative is on the line you desired or not. I kept a dairy of the action of the 60th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry with my experience in it, but is lost and I have had some trouble in collecting the various incidents connected therewith, besides as I progressed I found it was growing on my hands and must conderese I perhaps have omitted some little incidents that could have been as interesting to the Children as any thing I have written. This is that about Military Tactics and Drill that always interested me though I never expected to give it any special attention until after the firing on Fort Sumpter that excited me beyond control" and signed "Affectionaly Your Father, J. K. Marlay, Late Major of the 60th Regt. O. ???""
