Scope and Contents

The Orville Menard collection includes his diplomas from OU and the University of Nebraska, a program from the 1961 commencement ceremony, a photograph from 1954 of three men playing hockey, and a white "Omaha U. / OUampi" t-shirt. University Archives staff added a copy of his obituary from the time of Menard's death in January 2014.

In 1991, Menard offered audio recordings of 28 oral history interviews he completed in 1979-1980, some with Prof. Harl Dahlstrom, to the library. Also included were 15 KIOS radio station program recordings of "Seymour Smith's Omaha."

New material added June 8, 2017: This addition includes artifacts from the years Orville Menard was an OU undergraduate student; notes from his extensive research into Omaha political history; newspaper clippings; correspondence; copies of his publications; awards and honors presented to him by UNO; and a small number of items generated through his friendship with U.S. Senator and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, who had been one of his students.

The collection is open for research use. New material added June 8, 2017: Orville Menard was a Professor of Political Science at UNO from 1964 through the spring of 1998. During his retirement Professor Menard sorted through the collection of items acquired while at UNO and often mentioned to his wife Darlene that he wanted his materials donated to University Archives following his death.
