Heartland Gay Rodeo Association Records

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSS-0161

Content Description

The Heartland Gay Rodeo Association (HGRA) collection has been organized into nine series with materials ranging from 1993-2008. The HGRA was established in Papillion, Nebraska, in 1993 as a nonprofit chapter of the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). The association was created to not only support IGRA sanctioned rodeos, but to also raise funds for area LGBTQIA+ and AIDS organizations. HGRA hosted its inaugural rodeo in 1997, an event that continued in the Omaha area for several years.

These materials highlight the organization’s fundraising and rodeo efforts throughout the Midwest, particularly in Nebraska and Iowa. The materials include HGRA annual rodeo programs, flyers, and pamphlets, as well as newsletters, correspondence, and photographs. Some IGRA materials are also included in the collection. These materials highlight the IGRA convention held in Omaha in 1996 as well as an IGRA University manual that contains guidelines and general information about the IGRA and the expectations of its chapters. The collection documents the rodeos, social events, and contests affiliated with the HGRA as well as administrative changes from its inception in 1993 through 2008. Oversized posters affiliated with the organization are also part of the collection.

After Dino Andrade's death in 2017, his family including brother Greg Andrade inherited the contents of the storage unit and eventually donated it to UNO Libraries.
