Scope and Contents

The Steppenwolf Collection spans the years 1938-1991, with the bulk of the material dating from 1960-1977. The collection features the papers of Philip Boatright, editor of Steppenwolf: A journal of poetry and opinion, and his associate, Jean Shannon. Steppenwolf an independent, literary journal, featured poetry from the late 1960’s through the mid 1970’s. The Collection contains correspondence, books, manuscripts, photographs, newsletters, postcards, catalogs, and sound recordings. Also included are the books held in Steppenwolf’s library including rare poetry volumes by John Betjeman, Raymond Carver and items illustrated by noted children’s author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola. Steppenwolf: A journal of poetry and opinion was founded by Philip Boatright in 1965, and was published in five volumes from 1966 through 1974. The journal published works from poets located across the country during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The Glass Wind, published in 1980, is also Steppenwolf Six. The detailed publication history of Steppenwolf is as follows: Number One (Winter 1965-66), Number Two (Winter 1966-67), Number Three (Summer 1969) Double Issue, Number Four (Autumn 1970), Number Five (Winter 1973-74), and The Glass Wind/Steppenwolf Six (1980).

Conditions Governing Access

The collection is open for research use, with the following restrictions. Per the Criss Library's 1981 agreement with Philip Boatright, 1) Philip Boatright and his designates have continuing unrestricted access to the collection, including the right to photocopy; and 2) Letters and other materials written by Philip Boatright and contained in the collection may not be photocopied or published without written permission from Philip Boatright. Researchers may view the materials if they agree to these limitations. Consult Archives & Special Collections staff for assistance. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, the Nebraska Public Records Statutes (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 84-712 through 84-712.09), and other relevant regulations. Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the University of Nebraska Omaha assumes no responsibility.

Custodial History

On September 27, 1981, the University of Nebraska at Omaha purchased from Philip Boatright the Steppenwolf One to Five Archives (four cartons of manuscripts, correspondence, press files, proofs, etc.), with some conditional limitations on access. The purchase was received for UNO by librarian Mel Bohn, who had arranged the purchase through correspondence with Boatright.

Separated Materials

Serials and other volumes were separated and added to the library catalog by Angela Kroeger in April 2015. A list of these volumes is available from the repository.

Processing Information

Processing completed June 27, 2014, by Maureen McCombs, practicum student. Earlier processing by Criss Library staff sometime between 1981 and 2013. Books and serials were cataloged and added to the library catalog by Angela Kroeger in April 2015.
