UNO Department of English Creative Writing Publications
Scope and Contents
The UNO Department of English Creative Writing Publications include Cardinal Short Stories and a complete run of Grain of Sand. Cardinal Short Stories was a single volume published in June 1932 by members of the class in short story writing at the Municipal University of Omaha, taught by Hugh Robert Orr. The volume features eight stories, one by each of the seven students in the class plus an eighth story selected by all members of the class together. Grain of Sand (v. 1, no. 1, May 1952-v. 23, May 1974) was a literary anthology featuring works by students of creative writing at the Municipal University of Omaha and its successor the University of Nebraska at Omaha, including short stories, poems, essays, and novel excerpts. Grain of Sand was founded by OU Chair of the Department of English Ralph Wardle. Richard Duggin, who would later go on to found the Writer's Workshop at UNO, was involved in the later issues of Grain of Sand.
