Scope and Contents

The Robert M. Spire Papers comprise a large collection of papers, speeches, programs, writings, reports, articles, manuscripts, treatises, dissertations, correspondence, transcripts, files, poems, sheet music, audio cassettes, VHS video cassettes, photographs, awards, plaques, certificates, news clippings, pamphlets, ephemera, and various works by or in possession of Robert M. Spire. The collection covers his entire career, including his years of service on the University of Omaha Board of Regents (1963-1968), as Nebraska Attorney General (1985-1991), and as U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey's assistant (1991-1992).

Conditions Governing Access

Per the deed of gift the collection was closed until the death of Elaine Spire. Mrs. Spire died on March 12, 2022. Consult Archives and Special Collections staff for assistance. Manuscript collections and archival records may contain materials with sensitive or confidential information that is protected under federal or state right to privacy laws and regulations, the Nebraska Public Records Statutes (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 84-712 through 84-712.09), and other relevant regulations. Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the University of Nebraska Omaha assumes no responsibility.

Organized by Elaine P. Spire and Louise Spire prior to donation.

Custodial History

As early as 1998, negotiations were underway between Elaine P. Spire and Robert Nash of the Criss Library (then the University Library) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, regarding the donation of Robert M. Spire's papers. Elaine Spire and her daughter Louise Spire organized the papers prior to their donation. In 2005, Elaine Spire formally donated boxes of books and archival manuscript materials to the Criss Library, University of Nebraska at Omaha. Books were treated as general gift materials to the library, while the archival materials were placed in the University Archives.
