 File — Box: 4, Folder: 16

Scope and Contents

Newspaper clipping from The Berkshire Evening Eagle, Pittsfield, MA, March 12, 1955," of an article titled "Cummington Press Keeps Alive an Ancient Art, by S. Lane Faison Jr., chair of the Art Department at Williams College. The article is accompanied by a photograph of Harry Duncan and Wightman Williams at the press and reproductions of three of Williams' illustrations from The Hovering Fly by Allen Tate (Cummington Press, 1947). The article discusses Mary L. Richmond's exhibitions at the Chapin Library at Williams College, the history of the Cummington Press, and the art of the hand press as practiced by Duncan and Williams. Both the original clipping and a photocopy are included. The photocopy bears adhesive stains from where the two sheets were once taped together. Either the original clipping or the photocopy might be the "copy of the Lane Faison piece" referenced in Ray Nash's letter to Mary L. Richmond, dated 5 March 1957.

Sometime prior to 2020, the contents of MLR 150 and MLR 189 were mixed into the same folder. During processing in August 2021, items from this combined folder were divided into separate folders to improve description and preservation. Because the original contents of MLR 150 and MLR 189 overlapped significantly, the folders relating to the Berkshire Evening Eagle article contains material from both original source folders.
