Ephemera -- Cummington School of the Arts Catalog, 1951

 File — Box: 3, Folder: 20

Scope and Contents

Cummington School of the Arts Summer Session 1951 course catalog, brochure, and application for admission. The brochure and application were formerly laid inside the catalog.

The catalog is eight printed pages with a rust-colored cover of heavier paper. The cover reads, "CUMMINGTON // School of the Arts // [illustration depicting two buildings of the school] // PAINTING MUSIC CREATIVE WRITING // July 9 // to August 19 // 1951 // WELLER EMBLER, DIRECTOR". Inside the back cover is printed a quotation from Katharine Frazier, dated 1939. The catalog is 15.5 x 23 cm.

The brochure is a trifold sheet, 45 x 22.5 cm folded to 15 x 22.5 cm, reproducing seven black and white photographs of the school and students, with captions.

The application for admission is one sheet, printed single sided, 14.5 x 22.5 cm. The information requested included name, address, date of birth, and telephone number; a check-one option to select music, painting, or writing; summary of prior education; and request for four enclosures, including a letter explaining their plans for the summer work at Cummington, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or artist, a physician's certificate, and payment of the $25 application fee.

Processing Information

Sometime prior to 2020, several pieces of Cummington Press ephemera were placed in a folder labeled MLR 186. However, none of the four items in that folder were included in the handwritten Flamer inventory entry for MLR 186. (Note that all items from the handwritten Flamer MLR 186 listing have been accounted for as of 2021.) The four items in the mislabeled MLR 186 folder were the Cummington School of the Arts Summer Session 1951 course catalog, brochure, and application for admission (later determined to be MLR 189); a handwritten letter to Harry Duncan from Paul Standard, dated 12 June 1955 (MLR inventory number undetermined); a collection of eight exhibit labels from the Cummington Press exhibit at the Chapin Library at Williams College (MLR inventory number undetermined); and a typed note to Mary L. Richmond from Charles Antin of the Research Institute of America, Inc., regarding the Cummington Press exhibit (determined to be one of the items listed in MLR 263). During collection processing in 2021, Angela Kroeger separated the unrelated items from the mislabeled folder and described them separately.
