Scope and Contents
Five specimen pages from Four Early Stories, by James Agee (West Branch, Iowa: Cummington Press, 1964), printed by Harry Duncan and illustrated by Keith Achepohl. Each sample page consists of two folded sheets (each with four pages from the book), approximately 30 x 40 cm folded to approximately 30 x 20 cm. Each sample includes one intaglio etching and is enclosed in a wrapper. The first sample includes the title page through page 8, with the illustration and first four pages of the story "Boys Will Be Brutes" in a brown wrapper. The second sample includes pages 21-28, with the illustration and first six pages of the story "They That Sow in Sorrow Shall Reap" in a wrapper printed with a blue and brown repeating pattern. The third sample includes pages 29-36 with an illustration and the last six pages of "They That Sow in Sorrow Shall Reap" and the first two pages of "You, Andrew Volstead" in a brown wrapper. The fourth sample includes pages 37 through the colophon with an illustration and the last five pages of "You, Andrew Volstead" in a wrapper printed with a blue and brown repeating pattern. The fifth sample is a repeat of the fourth in contents, in a brown wrapper. All of Achepohl's illustrations depict human figures in a realistic style. The illustrations in fourth and fifth samples are signed by Achepohl.
