Nebraska Initiative 416

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series includes materials related to Nebraska Initiative 416, the state constitutional amendment which banned all same-sex unions in Nebraska in 2000.

Activists opposed to the initiative used the slogan "B.A.D. 416," with a logo depicting a red circle and slash over the letters "B.A.D." and the number 416. Contemporary sources say "B.A.D." was an acronym for "bigotry and discrimination."

Initiative 416 was approved by 70% of Nebraska voters on November 7, 2000, and was in effect in Nebraska until June 26, 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Obergefell v. Hodges ruled all laws banning same-sex unions to be unconstitutional.
