Scope and Contents Note
This sub-series contains materials from Senator Chuck Hagel’s tenure as a member of SFRC subcommittees. Measuring at 2.2 cubic feet, these folders contain meeting agendas, memorandums, hand-written notes, testimony invitations, testimony texts, committee notices, email correspondence, Senator Hagel’s statements, and attachments in forms of articles and datasets.
The subcommittees represented in these files are: - African Affairs - Central Asia and the South Caucasus - East Asian and Pacific Affairs - European Affairs - International Development and Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs and International Environmental Protection - International Economic Policy, Export and Trade Promotion - International Operations - Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs - Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps, Narcotics, and Terrorism Senator Hagel was the presiding chairman of the subcommittee on International Economic Policy, Export, and Trade Promotion. He was also the ranking member of the subcommittee on International Development and Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs and International Environmental Protection. The largest portion of the subcommittee files are from the International Economic Policy, Export, and Trade Promotion subcommittee. As the chairman of this subcommittee, Hagel’s committee staff carried out organizational matters concerning testimony and panel arrangements. Drafts of memorandums and letters with Senator Hagel’s handwritten corrections and suggestions are also included in materials within this sub-series. Correspondence exchange generated during the subcommittee scheduling process can also be found among the material in this sub-series.
Some of the major topics of this subseries include issues in Central and East Asia including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, North Korea, China, and Japan as well as the Near Eastern countries of Pakistan, Israel, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Iraq. A large portion of the Subcommittee files on International Economic Policy, Export, and Trade Promotion consist of United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Contracting Policies, specifically related to contracts for reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan.
