Scope and Contents Note

This sub-series contains 4 cubic feet of documents, organized in chronological order, related to Senator Chuck Hagel’s assignment to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1998-2008. Most of the folders are organized in the following order: agenda for the meeting, questions, witness testimonies, and issue-relevant documents.

Folders include pre-arranged memorandums from Senator Hagel’s committee assistants. Memorandums have materials covering wide range of topics. These topics include U.S. relations with China and Russia, nonproliferation agreements with Russia and India, North Korea Six Power talks, genocide in the Sudan, and issues related to the United Nations and NATO. A large portion of the hearings focus on issues related to the was in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as political instability in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran and U.S. attempts to reconstruct the Middle East.

Memorandums by Senator Hagel’s staff contain: • Information on the purpose of the meeting. • Positions of other committee members in regards to the hearing issues. • Possible discussion points and questions to be raised during the committee hearing. • Remarks by the committee members. • Opening statements and speeches for Senator Hagel.

Memorandums provided by SFRC: • Detailed background information on the issue topic. • Attachment with bills, treaties, doctrines, budget information, and biographical documents on witnesses. • Testimonies by invited witnesses. • Fact sheets.

Communication exchange in form of hand-written notes between Senator Hagel’s assistants and staff from other members of SFRC can be found among the above mentioned documents. Majority of the notes contain reminders and observations. Small portion of the notes are written in the letter format by committee assistants of SFRC members. Memorandums and drafts of other documents might contain highlights and personal notes by Senator Hagel or his assistants.

Rev. Stat. §§ 84-712 through 84-712.09), and other relevant regulations. Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the University of Nebraska Omaha assumes no responsibility.
