Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The Artifacts series contains 1,053 framed items and objects collected by Chuck Hagel between 1967 and 2016 as Deputy Administrator at the Veterans Administration, U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of Defense, and in his years outside of public service. Each artifact is described individually.

Artifacts are divided into 21 sub-series. Artifacts include artwork (53); artwork from the Senate Commission on Art (5); awards in the form of statues, plaques, framed items, and other commemorative objects (111); campaign materials (48); clothing (25); coins (62); dishes (32); flags (7); framed cartoons (67), newspaper (22) and magazine (17) covers; framed photographs (392); identification badges (5); medals (10); nameplates (6); photographs (8); paperweights (30); pins and buttons (36); plaques (15); Senate memorabilia (15); and a wide variety of items categorized as "assorted" (110). Items in the "assorted" category are memorabilia owned by or presented to Hagel at speeches and other events, and gifts from foreign officials, colleagues, and Nebraskans. Several hundred of the framed items hung on the Senator's office walls in Washington, D.C., and around Nebraska.

Rev. Stat. §§ 84-712 through 84-712.09), and other relevant regulations. Confidential material may include, but is not limited to, educational, medical, and personnel records. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the University of Nebraska Omaha assumes no responsibility.
