Biography

Rowland Haynes (1878-1963) was born in Worchester, Massachusetts, and educated at Williams College, Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University, and Clark University. The path of his career included teaching, social work, and government service, including a term as a New Deal National Recovery Act coordinator for Nebraska. He served as President of the Municipal University of Omaha from 1935 until 1948. In 1938, he oversaw OU's move from 24th and Pratt Streets to 60th and Dodge Streets. During his presidency, the College of Applied Arts and Sciences and the School of Adult Education were established, and OU became accredited by the North Central Association and approved by the American Association of Universities. After 1948, he remained at OU as a teacher of Adult Education classes for the rest of his life.
