Biography

James B. "Jim" Peterson (circa 1913-1990) was a composer and violinist who taught music at the University of Omaha/University of Nebraska at Omaha from 1953 until 1978. He was head of the OU/UNO Music Department from 1953 until 1976. He conducted the University Orchestra during this time. Prior to teaching at OU/UNO, he taught high school music. He graduated from the University of Omaha in 1938, went on to get his master's degree at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and his doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1953. He also played with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, served as president of the Metropolitan Arts Council (Omaha), served as president of the Music Teachers National Association, and reviewed music for the Omaha World-Herald newspaper.
