Biography

Dr. Doug Paterson taught theatre at the University of Nebraska at Omaha from circa 1981 until his retirement in 2018. He directed more than thirty theatre productions. He served as chair of the Theatre Department and as president of the UNO Faculty Senate.

He holds a B.A. from Yankton College (1968), M.A. from Cornell University (1970), and PhD from Cornell University (1972). He has dedicated more than two decades to studying the methods developed by Brazillian director Augusto Boal and his Theatre of the Oppressed, and he launched the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed (PTO) Conference in 1995. The PTO conferences continue to this day.

He was the 2011 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Leadership in Community-Based Theatre and Civic Engagement from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE).
