Biography
Allen R. Benton served as the first chancellor of the University of Nebraska. He arrived in Nebraska in May 1871, after serving as a professor and president at Northwestern Christian University (Butler University). Benton was responsible for equipping University Hall, planning the campus layout and made many trips across the state, delivering speeches and acting as a recruiter. He was responsible for moving the original College Farm, to its current location on east campus and for the design used in our University Seal. Benton returned to Butler University in 1876.
