Biography

John Forster was born in 1812 at Newcastle-on-Tyne and is best known for being the first author of Charles Dickens’s biography. He attended Newcastle Grammar School in 1828, as well as University College and the Inner Temple. Originally setting out to be a lawyer, Forster later decided to focus on journalism, and began writing for The Examiner. He became well-known among literary circles during the 1830s and was a close friend of Charles Dickens, reading early drafts and manuscripts of many of Dickens’s works.
