Biography

Gladys Grantham Benthack of Lexington, Nebraska, was a niece of Charles F. Horner, who was a pioneer in the Chautauqua tent movement and responsible for numerous circuit Chautauquas. In 1928 Gladys worked as a junior girl on the Premier Chautauqua circuit.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a signed manuscript “Tent Chautauqua: 1904-128” by Gladys Grantham Benthack and a few clippings on Chautauquas in Nebraska during the early 1900s.  Among the manuscript’s topics are the history of Chautauqua, the experience of attending and working in a Chautauqua, and the operation of a Chautauqua circuit.
