Shires, Rose L.


Rose Shires was the Head Volleyball Coach at UNO. After two seasons as assistant coach, she became head volleyball coach in 1990 and held that position for 29 seasons, until her retirement in 2019. She retired as the "winningest coach" in the program's history, with 510 carrer victories. She led the UNO team to the 1996 Division II National Championship. In addition to her coaching responsibilities, she was an instructor for 26 years in the UNO School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Shires was active at the national level as well, having served on the AVCA Head Coaches Committee and on the AVCA Board of Directors as a Division II representative, being a member of the NCAA Division II Regional Ranking Committee and the AVCA All-America Selection Committee, and, since 1989, helping coordinate the United States Volleyball Association Great Plains Zonal and Regional Tournaments. She received many awards and honors.
