Biography

John Christensen served as the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha from 2007 through 2017.

"John Christensen was named chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha on May 8, 2007, subject to approval of the Board of Regents. He had served as interim chancellor since September 2006 and is the first UNO chancellor to have also received a degree from the institution.

Dr. Christensen had been UNO's vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs since 2004. He began his tenure at the university in 1978 as a faculty member in the UNO College of Education's Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders. He subsequently served as chair of that department for 12 years.

While in the College of Education, he also was invited to teach as a visiting professor at the University of Kansas' Department of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology in 1981 and in China at Beijing Normal University in 1989. During his career, Dr. Christensen has presented at dozens of conferences and published a number of articles and professional reports focused on education or education related issues.

His community involvement has been both broad and deep – ranging from being on the board of directors for the Omaha Community Partnership to being a member of the Omaha 2000 Steering Committee to serving on various area school district advisory boards. Other organizations that Dr. Christensen has served on include: Nebraska Public Policy Education Committee Commission on Institutions of Higher Education: North Central Conference Peter Kiewit Institute Board of Policy Advisors Metropolitan Omaha Education Consortium Executive Steering Committee National Council of Graduate Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. For more than 25 years, he has also has been available for pro bono consultation on speech language pathology issues for schools and agencies.

Dr. Christensen received his bachelor's degree in speech and communication from Dana College, his master's degree in speech-language pathology from UNO and his Ph.D. in speech-language pathology from the University of Kansas. His areas of specialization and interest are pre-referral practices, teacher induction, fluency development and disorders and special education service delivery.

Dr. Christensen's professional organization involvement includes the Urban League of Nebraska (Life Member), Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, Association of American Colleges and Universities, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Council of Great City Colleges of Education, National Network for Educational Renewal, Nebraska Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, Nebraska Center for Excellence in Education, Nebraska Council of School Administrators, and the Nebraska Speech-Language-Hearing Association. He is also an active member of both Omnicron Delta Kappa and Phi Delta Kapa.

He and his wife, Jan, have three adult sons.
