Biography

Hugh P. Cowden joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska at Omaha as a journalism instructor in 1968. He became the first chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, formed by the 1975 merger of the Department of Speech and Department of Journalism, and served in that position until his retirement in 1995. He served as president of the UNO Faculty Senate in 1985/1986. Prior to coming to UNO, he taught at St. Joseph College in Indiana and Duquesne University in Pennsylvania. He was awarded the UNO School of Communication's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Cowdin was born in Milwaukee, WI. He received his B.A. (1953) and M.A. (1960) from Marquette University and his Ph.D. (1968) from the University of Iowa.
