Biography

Phi Delta Gamma is a national, interdisciplinary graduate fraternity founded in 1922. The organization is now open to both women and men seeking advanced degrees in any field, but at its inception, it was a sorority limited to graduate women with the goals of promoting professional ideals and offering social activities to women graduate students. In 1945, the Graduate Women's Club of the Municipal University of Omaha (the predecessor of the University of Nebraska at Omaha) was accepted for a charter in Phi Delta Gamma. As of 2014, Phi Delta Gamma scholarships at the University of Nebraska at Omaha are coordinated through the Office of Graduate Studies. The chapter ceased operations in 2018.

The purposes of PHI DELTA GAMMA are educational and charitable.
PHI DELTA GAMMA was founded in 1923 as a fraternity for women graduate students dedicated to the highest ideals of scholarship and fellowship.
In 1922 four business students, Helen Gould Brooks, Arbutus Stange, Elizabeth Miller, and Catherine Koch formed a Women's Commerce Club at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Subsequently, Beta chapter was organized in 1923 at American University. Alpha and Beta merged in 1925 to form Alpha chapter at American University. Dr. Frederick Juchoff is recognized as patron of PHI DELTA GAMMA.
NU CHAPTER is presently composed of 72 Active and Life members, 12 Associate members, and 5 Honorary members. Since its inception in 1945, the membership has achieved numerous community and scholastic honors, assisted scholarship recipients, and extended its membership to prospective initiates in new and varied master's degrees and doctoral areas.
NU CHAPTER was granted a charter June 2, 1945, the first charter west of the Mississippi River.
NU CHAPTER has provided several national officers such as: Presidents, Claramary Smith 1952-1954; Ruth Herman Nielsen Ph.D, 1968-1970; Marcia Abbott, 1974-1976; and Ivalyn Van Everey Ph.D, 1988-1990. Vice presidents, Bonnie Denker, 1948-50; Ruth Herman Nielsen, PhD., 1966-68; Marcia Abbott, 1972-74; Ivalyn Van Every, 1986-88. National secretary, Clara Mary Smith, 1950-52.
Regional coordinators include: Ruth Herman Nielsen Ph.D, 1974-1976; Kay Horton, 1976-1980: Therese Rosse, 1980-1982; and Judith Stribley, 1992-94. Director educational services, Ivalyn Van Every,PhD., 1978-80; Sally Ganem, 1984-86. Director of finance, Audrey Nelson, 1984-88; Linda Hammer, PhD., 1990-92. Executive secretary, Ruth Herman Nielsen, 1978. Parliamentarian, Marcia Abbott, 1990-92. Presently, Audrey Nelson serves as a finance committee member.
NU CHAPTER provides persons with continuing opportunities for self-education and development through interactions with those engaged in a variety of disciplines and professions. We encourage the continuation of education and professional growth by providing financial, educational, or advisory assistance.
NU CHAPTER is a sponsor of scholarship and loan funds. NU CHAPTER sponsors the Nelly Boyer, Dr. Mary-Ellen Patterson, and Clair Parker scholarships of $300 each to the University of Nebraska at Omaha Graduate College for students admitted to candidacy. We also provide an emergency loan fund to UNO Financial Aid Department. About 20 students per year take advantage of this aid. NU CHAPTER also sponsors the Claramary Smith scholarship of $300 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing graduate program.
NU CHAPTER also sponsors a members' scholarship and a members' loan fund.
The professions of NU CHAPTER are diverse. The professions of members include educators (preschool through 12th grade, undergraduate and graduate educators and administrators), financial and business analysts, social workers, scientists, and graduate assistants, to name a few.
NU CHAPTER'S fund raising event is a brunch/fashion show which is held in November. Proceeds from this event go to the scholarship and loan funds.
REQUIREMENTS TO ACHIEVE MEMBERSHIP INTO PHI DELTA GAMMA NU CHAPTER
Interested individuals must have achieved graduate school candidacy for a Master's degree or presently hold a Master's degree or a Ph.D or doctoral degree. All candidates must attend two of five meetings held on a Sunday in October and December through March at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Initiates will be given notice of the fulfillments of requirements and be invited to attend the Pledge Reception in March and duly installed into NU CHAPTER at a banquet in April. The last meetjng of the year is the installation of new officers in May.
